Investigating Wastewater: Solutions and Pollution is a SEPUP module designed for use in grades 7–12. The module contains a series of 10 activities that provide approximately 3 weeks of instruction.

Materials in Investigating Wastewater equipment kit:

  • 16 droppers
  • 16 stir sticks
  • 16 SEPUP filter funnels
  • 16 magnifiers
  • 500 filter paper circles
  • 40 packets of pepper
  • 16 9-oz. non-graduated plastic cups
  • 5 vials of pH paper
  • 5 packets of red drink mix
  • 8 vials each of:
    • crushed malachite
    • sodium chloride
    • Dominade
    • sugar
    • powdered milk
    • iron chloride
    • lauric acid
    • copper chloride
    • copper sulfate
    • neroline yara yara

8 30-mL dropper bottles of:

  • water (shipped empty)
  • alcohol (denatured ethyl)
  • red food coloring
  • universal indicator
  • 5% sodium carbonate
  • liquid starch
  • 8 60-mL dropper bottles of:
  • “Acme Wastewater”
  • HCl (0.1%)
  • KOH (0.1%)

Materials required but not provided in equipment kit:

  • 16 SEPUP trays
  • 1 class set of safety goggles
  • 1 overhead projector
  • chart paper or other large paper
  • paper towels
  • white, unlined paper
  • access to water
  • rusty steel wool
  • baking soda
  • 8 sets of colored marking pens or pencils (optional)
  • 1 plastic spoon (optional)
  • aluminum foil (optional)
  • 25,000 ppm copper chloride solution (optional)
