Thresholds and Toxicology is a SEPUP module designed for use in grades 7–12. The module contains a series of 10 activities that provide approximately 3 weeks of instruction

Materials in Thresholds and Toxicology equipment kit:

  • 16 droppers
  • 16 stir sticks
  • 40 plastic spoons
  • 16 flat plastic bags
  • 80 240-cc graduated plastic cups
  • 16 9-oz non-graduated plastic cups
  • 250 personal tasting cups
  • 1 vial of citric acid powder
  • 8 15-mL dropper bottles of universal indicator
  • 8 30-mL dropper bottles of:
  • water
  • “rat food”
  • “rat digestive juice”
  • “rat body mass”
  • Na2CO3 (5%)
  • NaOH (0.1%)
  • Reagent A (phenolphthalein)
  • Reagent B (5% CaCl2)
  • NaOH (0.4%)
  • NaOH (0.6%)
  • 8 60-mL dropper bottles of:
  • “lily juice”
  • HCl (0.125%)
  • 1 set of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)

 

Materials required but not provided in equipment kit:

  • 1 class set of safety goggles
  • 16 SEPUP trays
  • 16 empty (or full) 355-mL (12-oz) cans or bottles
  • 9 empty two-liter plastic bottles
  • 8 sets of colored pencils or marking pens
  • 1 set of transparency marking pens in 5 different colors
  • 1 overhead projector
  • 1 permanent marker
  • 1 measuring teaspoon
  • chart paper or other large paper
  • paper towels
  • white, unlined paper
  • graph paper
  • access to water
  • 1 bottle/package of adult aspirin and children’s aspirin (optional)
  • headlines and advertisements with unsubstantiated claims (optional)
  • packages/safety sheets for prescription medicines and herbal remedies and/or dietary supplements (optional)
